Swiss BECCS project completes full CO₂ value chain with secured transport agreement

Airfix is pleased to announce that CO2 Energie AG has secured an agreement with HOYER Group for the transport of biogenic CO₂ from Switzerland to Denmark. With capture, transport, permanent storage and monetisation now all contractually in place, this milestone completes the project’s full end-to-end BECCS value chain and marks a European first for a Swiss carbon removal project.

The agreement represents a decisive step in moving the project from development into execution, demonstrating that cross-border CO₂ transport and permanent storage for small- and medium-sized emitters can be delivered as a fully integrated, bankable solution.

Completing a pioneering BECCS value chain

The Swiss-based project, led by CO2 Energie AG – a joint venture between RegionalWerke AG Baden and Recycling Energie AG – captures biogenic CO₂ at Switzerland’s largest biogas plant near Niederwil. Starting in summer 2026, the CO₂ will be liquefied on site and transported, by truck and rail, to Denmark for permanent geologic storage, enabling the generation of high-integrity carbon removal credits certified by the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment.

With the transport agreement now in place, the project is among the first in Europe to have all the elements of the BECCS value chain secured:

  • Capture and liquefaction at the operational biogas facility;
  • Multimodal CO₂ transport under a dedicated logistics contract with HOYER Group;
  • Permanent offshore geologic storage in the Danish North Sea with Project Greensand Future operated by INEOS; and
  • Monetisation of negative emission certificates through long-term offtake, notably the Climate Cent Foundation’s CHF 10 million commitment until 2030.

“This agreement marks a true milestone for our project. With capture, transport, permanent storage and monetisation now all contractually secured, this is no longer a conceptual initiative – it is a viable, executable and real BECCS value chain. We are proud to be delivering a Swiss and European first, particularly for small- and medium-sized biogenic emitters, and we are confident that this model can play a meaningful role in unlocking high-integrity negative emissions in Switzerland.”

From early transport concept to competitive tender

The transport solution was developed through a structured process coordinated by Airfix. Initial high-level transport concepts and cost estimates were prepared as part of the Climate Cent Foundation application. Building on this foundation, Airfix engaged with a wide range of logistics providers to assess alternative transport concepts, costs, emissions profiles and operational constraints.

Once the project partners were ready to proceed, Airfix launched a formal Request for Proposals (RfP) to ensure a fair, transparent and directly comparable selection process.

Key outcomes of the tender process

  • 10 logistics providers submitted 15 distinct transport concepts
  • Multiple transport modalities and routing opinions were evaluated
  • Two providers were shortlisted for in-depth technical and commercial interview
  • HOYER Group was selected as the best-fit partner in close alignment with CO2 Energie AG

The tender and evaluation phase ran in Spring 2025, followed by approximately six months of contractual alignment, allowing for detailed coordination of project specifications and interface risks.

“Delivering cross-border CO₂ transport at this level of complexity requires more than technical advice – it requires active system integration and an honest-broker role across the value chain. Through early concept development, broad market engagement and a transparent, competitive tender process, we were able to de-risk transport and align interfaces from capture through to storage. This approach has proven effective and creates a replicable blueprint for future BECCS projects across Europe.”

Jonas Lotscher, Managing Director at Airfix

Coordinating CO₂ transport and storage across borders

Airfix acted as a coordinating and advisory partner throughout the process, managing interfaces between capture, logistics and storage partners and resolving practical issues outside standard logistics contracts. This included structuring responsibilities across handover points, aligning transport terms with the storage agreement and supporting the project through key cross-border requirements such as waste export permitting, VAT treatment and customs duty considerations for CO₂ movements between Switzerland and the EU.

Under the agreed solution, approximately 4,250 tonnes of liquefied biogenic CO₂ per year will be transported from the capture site in Niederwil in ISO containers. The CO₂ will be moved by truck to Basel, transferred to trains for transport to Hamburg, and then shipped by truck to the Port of Esbjerg, where it will enter the offshore storage chain operated by Greensand. Emissions associated with the transport process are fully accounted for within the project’s carbon accounting framework, ensuring the integrity of the resulting carbon removal credits.

“Transporting liquefied CO₂ safely and reliably across borders demands specialised expertise and robust operational standards. At HOYER, we bring decades of experience in multimodal logistics for sensitive products, combined with a strong commitment to safety, reliability and execution at scale. We are proud to support this first-of-a-kind BECCS value chain and to contribute to the development of CO₂ transport as a core industrial service for the sustainable transition.”

Axel Remplewski, Executive Director Gas Logistics at the HOYER Group

A blueprint for scalable negative emissions

By completing the full CO₂ value chain, this project sets a new benchmark for BECCS deployment in Switzerland and beyond. It demonstrates that negative emission projects can move beyond pilots to fully integrated, commercially viable solutions – supported by private sector investment, international collaboration and robust contractual frameworks.

Airfix extends gratitude to the Migros Pioneer Fund for their impactful funding and support, the EU’s Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP) for their support on the Airfix-led Carbon Rhine Route project, as well as Carbon Impact and our other partners whose dedication has driven this achievement.
